It IS Easy Being Clean and Green

Soon enough we can open the windows and let in some fresh air.  If you live in a temperate climate, you may have been doing this for the past few months. Rather than contaminating your home with synthetic aerosols and air fresheners containing VOC’s, volatile organic compounds, try opening the windows or place a beautiful vase of fragrant flowers around your home.  According to Grist, “in homes where aerosol sprays and air fresheners were used frequently, mothers experienced 25 percent more headaches and were 19 percent more likely to suffer from depression, and infants under six months of age had 30 percent more ear infections and 22 percent higher incidence of diarrhea.”  There is no doubt, then, reducing the amount of venomous contaminants in your home should be an easy Earth Promise you can make.

There are many sites that offer inexpensive green cleaning alternatives.  So choose to eliminate (or at least reduce) the chemical-satiated cleaning products from your home.  Below are some sites that offer ways to concoct your own home-made cleaning provisions as well as companies which produce genuinely eco-friendly cleaners:

Seventh Generation

Simple Pure Clean

If you decided to purchase the non-toxic cleaning supplies, switch to concentrated versions.  Environmentally, you will be saving the amount of water usage and help lessen packaging production.  Although companies are turning to compact, concentrated  versions of their original brands, (obviously making an effort be a be a bit more eco-conscious), don’t forget to read the labels on these cleaning products to ensure they are natural or free of any unwanted ingredients (i.e. nontoxic, no dyes, biodegradable, non-petroleum based, etc.)

Lastly, if you are one to bring your garments to the dry cleaners, make an Earth Promise to stop this personal trend.  Not only is it costly, but bad for the environment and your health.  Wise Geek talks about the toxic chemicals used to keep your clothes in perfectly pressed appearance.  There are some dry cleaners today that offer more non-toxic, or CO2 cleaning methods. To save money, try WOOLITE® Dry Cleaner’s Secret® Cleaning Cloths. They are touted as safe for the environmental and non-toxic.

We love the Method and 7th Generation cleaning products and it’s even better that we can pick them up at Traget. Baking soda and vingegar work wonders especially when cleaning formica.
